Dear Gunter,

Thank you again for the very nice time you gave us in your Fantasy Island.

Not only did we have a great time but also some very exciting Dives. The food
was very good and the atmosphere made us feel like at home.
Gerd is a great guy and we had a very good time with him. We are very happy to hear
that Karin is well and the baby too and also that it’s a girl.

It will take us another couple of weeks to select the pictures and put them in
the internet, we will let you know anyway.

We won’t forget to include you again in one of our next trips. We are back into the
usual stress so you can be sure that we will need vacations sooner than later.

All the best,
Bernd & Conchita

Dive Safaris

Picture this. Lying on a sun-deck, floating on the bluest blue after an
hour of diving among sharks, turtles, tunas and jacks, waiting for the next

Three days of these, and only for a Song.  You can never get closer to
Paradise this easy.  This was the maiden voyage of DDIII, a dive safari
boat with three simple cabins and two sun decks.  Gunter wanted a
no-nonsense dive safari with the minimum basics: a good night's rest,
better food and the best dives.

Flying in by Asian Spirit we took a one-hour jeepney ride, amidst the Coron
backdrop  of  lush vegetation, a river, and the largest cattle ranch in the
Philippines.   After "mooing" our way, we boarded the big "banca", our home
for  3 days and 2 nights.  What followed next was the closest to nature one
could  ever get.  We dove till we dropped.  As a delightful bonus, we first
dove  in  the  area  of  Club  Paradise, dove the Kyokuzan Maru, a Japanese
freighter  with  probably  the  best visibility I have ever seen on a wreck
(since  the  ship  stands upright, you see the entire magnitude of it going
down,  and  not  only that, the wreck has a Japanese staff car inside it!),
and  then  the  Club Paradise reef.  We were desperate to see the legendary
Dugong  but  unfortunately,  except  for the hilarious attempt of Arnold to
simulate  the  Dugong  sound (much to DM Onez' disappointment), we were not
blessed.   The  reef  had its share of white and black tip sharks, turtles,
huge  (a  thousand)  school  of  jacks,  rays and tunas.  That night we had
drinks  at  the  Club  Paradise  Dugong Bar then boarded the boat to cruise
towards  Apo Reef, our underwater haven for the next two days.  True to its
reputation,  Apo  Reef  is  a  diver's paradise---a compact area of sharks,
turtles, tunas, jacks, mantas, the best variety of hard corals I've seen so
far,  and  visibility as far as the eye could see.  Northeast of the island
was an amazing drop-off of 80 feet which leveled off to another sudden drop
off  of  about  100  feet---it  was a wondrous mix of sponges, hard corals,
surgeons,  wrasses,  fusiliers,  unicorn  fish schools, and a an astounding
overdose  of pelagics.  The island itself was an awesome treat too.  We had
a  grand  time  going  around  the  white  island, going through the bamboo
bridge, seeing the "Blair Witch" forest, pass mangroves, and hanging out in
the  freshwater lagoon.  During our SIs we would lay out on the deck, watch
the  teeming  fish  life  (mind  you, from the surface, it was THAT clear),
kayak,  snorkle  and  immerse ourselves in the ocean's bounty. We ended the
trip  with  a party at the Night Dive Bar in Coron island, where we feasted
on sandwiches, Blues music, and the gift of new friends.

It  was an extraordinary trip.  We were 7 brave souls, who braced ourselves
for a live-aboard that was "off the beaten track", only to realize that the
best  part  of the trip, was allowing Mother Nature to work for us. Special
thanks  to Gunter, a.k.a. Kevin Costner of "Waterworld", the epitome of the
perfect Dive-Master-Boat Owner-Merman-Cowboy.

First of all we’d like to say great thank you and your family for your warm and friendly reception and a great
organization of our holiday. We’ll never forget that brilliant, accurate organized, safe and interesting diving to several
wrecks, beautiful reefs with huge fish shcools. The excursions to the Cathedral Cave and the Barracuda lake were just
amazing! This can’t be forgotten! We haven’t got a time to bore, even when we haven’t been diving. Having BBQ
at the Horse Valley and a horse excursion were very-very nice. We thank Gerd Schulte and all the team for their
polite attention adn professionalism. Also we thank Discovery Divers for the brilliant holiday; we dream to be back
in the future. Hoping that we were the first, but not last Russians who’s been to the Coron Island.

Gunter & Team,

Without delay I decided to sit down and write you as soon as we returned home to Manila.Diving Coron with Discovery Divers was exactly what we were hoping for, a “great two days of diving with new friends”.What was so great is that we do not often get what we hope for but in this case, thanks to you and all the work you have done to make Discovery Divers easy, fun and safe, our anticipation was well rewarded. We discovered that the Coron Wrecks offer wonderful diving for all levels of diving skills and are not only for advanced technical divers.

After making the trip down from Manila which, thanks to support from Ocean Colors of Makati, was convenient, easy and reasonably priced. We could not believe that there are not more people from Manila diving in Coron. It is a perfect weekend trip into history with the comfort of a resort which felt like we were at home from the minute we arrived.I can say, without question, Coron offers much better wreck diving than Subic Bay or any location in the region.

Myrna and I will be back in touch with you “very soon” to arrange a dive safari to visit more of the fantastic dive sites you have discovered in Coron.

Best Regards and Safe Diving,

Tom & Myrna van der Heyden

Hi guys.  Just thought I'd share our trip with you.

We  just  came  from a diver's paradise.   How was it possible to mix wreck
diving, diving beneath a limestone cliff, diving between varying degrees of
temperature  in  a  mix of freshwater and saltwater, and coral reef diving,
all  in one weekend?  I couldn't quite Fathom it myself, but that we did in
through Discovery Diver's in Coron, Palawan.

We  arrived  at  5am  in  Coron  Island  and Gunter (owner of the Discovery
Diver's  resort,  and  "The  Grandfather of Diving in Coron") took from the
port  to  the resort in ten minutes.  The resort was on an island, set in a
rustic  atmosphere  made  with the least intrusion on nature. The resort is
built  among  mangroves,  tall bamboo, lush trees, and the sea.  The resort
was  built  in  such a way where you can actually see, breath, smell, taste
and feel nature's bounty.  We even felt like Robinson Crusoe meets National
Geographic  on  this  trip.  And, not only did our eyes feast in the rustic
ambience, our stomachs did too? the food was delectably superb!

Our  first  day  was  dedicated to wrecks.  It was our first time to dive a
real  shipwreck,  and  we were in for a big surprise.  Having heard stories
about  the  not  so  great  visibility in wrecks, we were surprised to find
visibility  of  at  least 12 meters!  We went down the Tangat Island Wreck,
Olympia  Maru  and  Taie  Maru.  These ships were well-preserved historical
remains of Japanese freighters that sunk during the bombing of Coron Island
in  the 50's.  Tangat Island Wreck is a Japanese freighter sitting upright.
The  boat  was approximately 140 meters in length and we went down to about
30  meters  (90  feet  on my computer).  The cargo room of the wreck was an
impressive  sight,  a  shoal  of  GIANT  snappers,  maybe 1 meter in length
greeted us, followed by giant Bat fishes, which we saw around the mast, bow
and  stern.   Two huge mackerels followed us through the length of the ship
and shoals of yellow fusiliers circled around the mast of the boat.  It was
a  beholden  sight.  Somehow  you  realize that you are in a well-preserved
piece of history, inside what once was, a gigantic machine of war.

Our  next wreck dive was Kogya Maru, a Japanese freighter, about 160 meters
in length, lying on her starboard site.  We went inside the cargo rooms and
found  loaded  construction  materials,  bags of cement, a cement mixer and
even a bulldozer! The dive was eerie, and you feel the energy of a ship and
its  passengers,  once carrying the supplies needed for war.  Once again we
were  greeted with big Groupers, fusiliers, and huge lionfishes swimming in
threes.   We  stayed  longer  than  intended trying to maneuver through the
inside the wreck.  The inside of the ship was at 25 meters and so we had to
cut  short our dive inside the ship to keep within no decompression limits.
The  port  side  outside  the  ship  was superbly covered with hard corals.
Beautiful  black corals and hydroids swayed in the water and we saw a great
number  of  damselfishes,  triggerfishes, butterfly and angels, anemonefish
and fusiliers.

Our  last dive for the day was Okikawa Maru (formerly Taie Maru).  It was a
Japanese  tanker, about 200 meter in length.  We penetrated the wreck at 25
meters  and  had  to  maneuver inside the zigzagging entrances, almost like
figuring  out  a maze.  We had time to really search the inside of the ship
and  this  wreck  is  so  well  preserved,  you  really feel like you are a

passenger  of  a  ship.  I got a trip out of looking out the ships circular
windows  and seeing the sea outside, it was surreal.  Apart from the inside
of  the  ship, this wreck is also totally covered with beautiful corals and
offers a large variety of marine life, including nudibranches, anemones and
sea cucumbers.

We didn't think anything could beat the Saturday dives but we were in for a
big  surprise.   Sunday was definitely the most unbelievable, breathtaking,
mind-blowing,  outrageous  dive  ever!  Our  first  dive  was  at  Gunter's
Cathedral.   Gunter,  who  was so accommodating and admirable to join us in
this  dive,  discovered this site.  The dive is both a cave and coral dive.
No  amount  of  words  can fairly describe the wonder of this dive.  It was
almost  as  if you had died and resurrected inside a cave.  The dive has an
almost  spiritual  feeling  to  it.  We entered a hole at the bottom of the
sea,  pass through a small dark channel and then out of the dark into light
where  you  can see a reflection of the cave in the surrounding waters.  We
followed  the  slight  daylight penetration and into a big cathedral behind
the  sea.  You glance up and then surface in a big limestone cave, and then
go  down  again,  to  see  the shafts of light dancing in the water, as the
light  streams  in  through a hole in the wall. Unreal!  This site has even
been  rated  among the best dives in the world. The next dive was even more
amazing.   We  went  up  a  limestone  cliff in full gear, down a cove with
awesome  scenery, aquamarine freshwater lake surrounded by limestone cliffs
and bonsai-like trees.  We went down the lake and went through the weirdest
of  dives.  Changes  of  water  temperature  greeted  us  up  to  an almost
sauna-steam  bath  dive  of  38  Celsius!   This  is  the  most  extreme of
thermoclines!  What more, you can even see the thermal layers, swim down to
boil  and  then  swim  up  the layer for a cold water plunge.  We were also
swimming with a huge barracuda, the king of the lake of approximately 1.5m!
Definitely unbeatable!

It seemed like one weekend was packed with the most extraordinary
adventure.  The weekend cost us so little and yet was worth a multitude.
Thank you to Mother Nature's bountiful blessing, Gunter Burnett of
Discovery Diver's (you may contact him at 09209012414), and the gift of
friends without whom this trip wouldn't have been as wonderful.

We also enjoyed diving with you. We know that it is not very often that one
gets to dive with Gunter.....We truly missed the Gunter's Cathedral, but we
will come back for it....We truly enjoyed our short stay and have already
promised to come back very soon.

The dives were great, as usual.  In behalf of my friends, I
would also like to extend our thanks for Gerd for taking care of all of us
during our dives. He was very patient and considerate. Just like what you
said, "there is always an excuse for a bad dive, but not for bad food".  The
food was great and so was the accommodation.

Dear Gunter and Ching,

This is a belated note to let you know again how thoroughly Adam and I
enjoyed the four days we spent diving in Coron.  A large of the credit for
this goes to you both for the kind hospitality you offered, feeling of
homeiness your shop conveys and especially the excellent support services.
I loved just sitting around in the evening hearing your stories, both
historical and otherwise. You both have such warm personalities. No wonder
you have so many repeat visitors.  I'm sure I will be one of them,
hopefully in the not too distant future.

In fact I was so thrilled by the experience, that I have resolved to do a
lot more diving in the future and went out and bought new fins, booties
and gloves at Whitetip.  I must say I seem to enjoy diving more each time,
but the experience in Busanga really moved my enthusiasm up several
notches.

Let's stay in touch.  Let me know it you discover that missing plane or
any more wrecks.

Gunter,

It was a great pleasure to stay at your resort (aka paradise) and it certainly was a very
special weekend for us. Everything was just perfect (maybe there could have been less
mosquitoes but that's out of your control!). I am missing sitting at the breakfast table and
being able to look out onto the water. We hope to see you again sometime down the
track.

Please extend our thanks to Fe and all your staff who did a fantastic job at making it the
weekend it was.

We will make sure that Manila, Melbourne and Riems hears all about it.

Hello!Here is my quote

I will have to admit that Discovery Divers is one of the greatest places in
the world where a man (or woman) can live or dive.  I mean, wherelse in the
world can you dive World War II wrecks,  have ice-cold San Miguel Beer, eat
Jhing's great food and hang out with great people like Gunter, Eric, Dave,
Mark and Pete and have a slamming good time. I will never forget my stay at
Discovery Divers for the rest of my life!

Just wanted to tell you that although this has been my second

than what I've been used to seeing in our wrecks at Subic Bay.

Just to say that, after hours on that boat to Batangas, a mega 26 hour

    Hi Gunter,
I finally found some time to go through my Coron photos and post some to my web site. As we discussed when I was in Coron, I'm happy for you to use them for any of your promotional material, and would appreciate you pointing any interest in them my way.

The web address is www.inner-space.co.uk/photos. Please feel free to pass it on, or if you like to link to it from your wer site - up to you.

I know Alex emailed you on behalf of the group, but I'd also like to thank you personally for everything you did to make our trip enjoyable. I felt that you and your staff did everything you could to make our stay enjoyable and to ensure we got everything done that we wanted. I would have certainly liked another few days out there to further explore the Irako and Akitsushima, which are both excelent wrecks. Maybe one day I'll get back to Coron...

    what you need to know.

    The resort
Although the town is OK it was a bit too loud and wasn't really what
we were looking for. Once we got to the Gunter's island it was a huge
relief to find it was peaceful, relaxing and clean with great views and
good food, an excellent place to chill out - stay here if you want
something a little higher class without having to pay huge amounts of
money. You can feel a million miles away from the town but know it's
only a ten minute boat ride away; we went to the town only once in
the week we were there and that was only to check our emails.

    The Diving
Gunter and Gerd are very good dive masters, everything was safe and
the equipment was fine. The wrecks are around an hour away but the
good thing is that Gunter's banca's have netting tied onto the
outriggers, something I haven't seen anywhere else in the Philippines,
this means you have a very restful hammock ride there and back, take
a couple of books and catch up on some reading. The wrecks we
brilliant although to be absolutely honest this was our first experience
of wreck diving so it's hard to make any real comparisons. There were
some great swim throughs, no current and the visibility was OK. Also
the lake dive was a really weird experience - like diving in a hot bath.

    The staff
Everyone made us feel very welcome, it feels more of a family
business than some big impersonal operation and you end up wishing
that they all succeed in making the business a real success. I've
never felt so OK with handing over my money at the end of the week.

So to finish, go to this place if you want good wreck diving in a
relaxing atmosphere away from all the raves and girlie bars. If you

    Dear Gunter

Thanks for the e-mail - it arrived safe and sound.  It was good to see you
again - we enjoyed catching up  on old times with you.  Thrilled to see
that your business is flourishing.  Our Discovery Divers T-shirts were the envy of all the
others on board the Tristar with us - as I said there were 16 of us.  We
managed to do about 28 dives in 9 days which was pretty good going.  About
16 of them were on the wrecks!

I have had a browse arund your site - I am most impressed.  In fact we had
a copy of the wreck details on board which helped us identify the wrecks as
we found them and anticipate  what to expect, especially depth wise!  Good
    work!

Our diving was great, although not quite as magical as the time we spent
with you - I think that everything was so perfect for us that time - the
group, the weather, the visibility, the life on the wrecks, the reefs, your
Cathedral, even the sunset as we came up from the first dive,  and of
course all the new experiences for most of our group who were only recently
qualified at that stage.  It is a trip that none of us will ever forget.

This time we had more experienced divers and so did more intensive wreck
diving.  The Olymia probably rates as my favorite, although I did enjoy the
Irako and would have liked to have done another dive on her had there been
more time.  The Akitsushima was also a good wreck - I found some
cloth/material over some of the barrels near one of the cranes that felt
rather velvety - do you have any idea what it was - I somehow doubt that
they had velvet curtains on warships!   There is also part of a porthole on
the top of her (not too far from where the material was) - it appears to
have been dropped there by some salvager.

We stopped by at Club Paradise on our way out and did some good reef dives
there and then went on to the Anilao area for our last day of diving -
plenty of fish life up there!

    Regards to your family

accommodate me.  The staff were all polite and friendly.  The meals were
delicious and sharing family style allowed us to have great conversations
and to get to know one another a little.

I'd love to come again when I could dive.

The best to all of you.

    Sincerely,
Jo Brown (USA)  Currently living in Korea.

The lousy weather up here brought us thinking of the Philipines. Even though
it is only a little more than a month since we left it seems like a year. It
has been raining for days now, with the temperature dropping all the way to
0 degs. Yesterday we went diving. The viz was 4m, and water temp 10 degs!!

How remote from Coron! everybody that have seen our snap shots have been
envious at us - even the underwater pictures we took with your camera came
out well. The Tae Maru and the Akitsushima were breathtaking, but so was the
surface scenery and the operation you are running. The thought of the
evening at the hot springs when I look out the window, make us want to come
    back.

    Hello Gunter,

Thanks for your hospitality during my stay and I really enjoy the diving in Coron to
those WWII wrecks, I believe I will go there again.

Those dives in Coron are more missionary so it feels to me I obtained something
over there because this kind of experience wouldn't happen all the time for diving.

Keep in touch and see you around

    Subject: A Great Time

Howdy Gunter & Family, Pete, Bill, and Eric,

It's been a few months since I  was in Coron but the experience is still
fresh in my mind.  My friends talk about their vacations but I stop them in
their tracks to brag about my time in Coron with Discovery Divers. I tell
them about the best vacation and dive experience I've had to date, with the
friendliest, helpful, most experienced and confidence inspiring dive staff
    imaginable.

I want to thank everyone for making me feel like part of a family while I
was at Discovery Diver.  Every aspect was great, from the low pressure and
accomadating attitude shown in arranging which sites to dive, the on-boat
service, comfortability, professionalism and very importantly the humor
shown by all aboard, to the delicious variety of the family style dinner and
conversation every evening.  I always felt at home in the dive shop,
Discovery Divers truely made me feel like your house was my house whether I
was having my morning coffee, planning a dive, preparing my gear or kicking
back with an ice cold San Miguel late in the evening.

It's hard to say what was my favorite or the best spot I dived.  There were
parts of all; the Cathedral, the Olympia where I earned my Wreck Specialty,
the night dive at the Pinnacle, Delian Rock and Barracuda lake that combined
to make me feel like I'd done a little of everything. I also loved the
    Utlraplane ride.

...We had some good dives in PG, and the party
atmosphere was great, but I think  Tom and I agreed that we both could have
stayed in Coron and Discovery Divers for the rest of our stay in the
Philipines and been more that satisfied.

I've shown everyone I know the picture from my trip and Tim & Sonia, RJ &
Kia, Tom and I have got together several times since then.  I thank you
again for the friendship I was shown by Discovery Divers and for the
friendships I made and have continued in Tokyo that I made through Discovery
Divers.  I don't think that would have happened if not for the outstanding
experiences and attitudes shown by all of you at Discovery Divers.

As far as I'm concerned there is only one dive shop in Coron that I will
ever recommend, or that I will ever do business with and I have no doubt
that I will be there again.  Be ready!

Thanks again and good luck to everyone,

    Mike Springs - Tokyo, Japan

    Subject: Great memories!

    Hello Gunter,

Well, I'm back here in the rat race of America (sadly). I would like to tell
you that my most enjoyable time during this last trip was the time I spent
    in Busuanga.

Please tell Peter that I had a lot of fun on my "warm-up" dives -- and that
I particularly enjoyed his sense of humor.

But most of all, I cherished the time we spent at Discovery Divers -- you
and Jhing made us feel instantly at ease. The buffet on our last night was
terrific, while the conversation was easy flowing and enjoyable. Truly a
    memorable experience!

I did get to dive the Taei Maru (Concepcion) wreck with Jean-Paul of Las
Hamacas. It was one of the most awesome dives I've experienced! It's
actually revitalized my interest in wreck diving!

I will be writing a trip report on my few days in Busuanga -- and will be
posting the photos that we took of your gang. Look for it soon!

I can't wait for my next trip to Coron as I am looking forward to diving the
other wrecks and the "Lake" in Coron Island.

In the meantime, I hope to let the world know what a great outfit and crew
you have there, Gunter. I'm so glad we were able to meet and I wish you all
    the success in the future!

Please give my best to Jhing, Peter, and Eric..

"Discovery Divers and its resort gave me two vacations in one: great,
adventurous diving and relaxation in the tropics.  The wonderful hospitality
of Gunter and the staff along with the pleasant resort facilities made for a
very enjoyable, 'battery recharging' time.  The wreck diving catered to a
variety of skill levels, and provided a great opportunity for advanced
courses with Gunter.  I would fully recommend it to any diver seeking
adventure and wanting 'to get away from it all' in comfort!"
